Better known as P’tit Quinquin in the French film circle, the film essays a murder mystery in a French town and the subsequent turn of events. The movie starts with the body of a cow being fetched out from the sea. The cow is anything but ordinary. A gruesome murderer renders a woman’s body headless and after that, he stuffs her body in the cow’s stomach. Nobody has the clue to the murderer. The case is handed over to the idiosyncratic Captain Van der Weyden who keeps on blabbering meaninglessly. Director and writer Alain Guiraudie takes no shame in displaying the anatomical structure of man. He has got his full-screen camera right in position to capture every bit of it. In his “Staying Vertical”, Guiraudie introduces us to Léo (Damien Bonnard) a filmmaker who seeks inspiration for his upcoming film. He finds himself in South France and during his scouting journey; his attention is captured by Marie (India Hair). After delivery, Marie is stressed and suffers from post-natal depression. She isn’t sure of Léo, who is one day here and the other away. The decision she makes is to abandon both Léo and their baby. Now, Léo has to take care of the baby alone.
Guiraudie’s version of man and woman in this film is just explicit and although it is realistic, he certainly went too far with every scene. You may also call him one of the French provocateurs, but his take on sensuality is quite high. “Staying Vertical” is a clash of minds, yet not complicated to understand. It is an engaging film that will surely require you to question Guiraudie’s intention.

Some French men like Bertrand Bonello aren’t a joke when it comes to creativity. “Nocturama” is not the best, but has got something unique for us all. Perhaps you heard this common saying- an idle mind is a devil’s workshop and the saying has just been proven by Bertrand. His ideology for the film unveils a group of young fellows who for unclear reasons plan a terror attack on Paris. Once the attack is staged, they run off to a department store to watch how the city reacts to the explosion. Strange as it may seem, Bertrand (director and writer) never provided any conservation for the seven Parisian teens who participated in the attack. The film illustrates its tale in a form of flashbacks and also interconnects events from different perspectives. “Nocturama” will present several questions regarding the scenario depicted. They are only intended to cause pain, sorrow, destruction and probably a result of revenge. The film generally received positive critics with some critics describing it as provocative. It also won the SIGNIS award among other few awards.
